Hickey's Bakery and Cafe
The painted titles outside Nuala Hickey’s iconic Clonmel bakery promise: “Spirit Store“ and “Fancy Bakery”.
On both counts, the customer will be disappointed.
No spirits are sold. And Ms Hickey’s bakery and café is the least fancy place you could possibly imagine. Uh huh, not fancy at all.
It would be more accurate to call Hickey’s a “Spirited Store” – the staff have that priceless Tipperary nous and candour which is so refreshing – and a “Fastidious Bakery” for here is a traditional bakery where tradition is respected and honoured. The baking is true, generous, and real – the battenburg; the eclairs; the cob loaves; the pear and almond; the fruit scones and, of course, their benchmark tea brack, which is one of the finest things created anywhere in Ireland.
It may not be fancy, and it may not sell any hootch, but soak up the pleasure of Hickey’s and we promise that you will feel light-headed, and a little dazed by the charm, rigour and magic of a true Irish icon.
