The menu at Ray and Jane’s water’s edge Wineport Lodge is one of those classic creations that puts you in mind of a great, modern work or art, like the sleeve of a Blue Note record, or a Penguin paperback. There are soups and salads, starters and light bites, casual and sharing plates, steaks from the revered Tormey’s butchers, dishes from the farm and the sea, classic burgers, vegetarian and vegan dishes and daily specials. The menu is augmented by a conscise, smart wines list, and a brilliant selection of craft beers. You actually couldn’t write a better menu and, of course, the kitchen team at The Wineport deliver what they advertise with adept skill. It’s an indicator of just how expert a hotelier Mr Byrne is, and what a fine crew he has built at this beautiful lakeside destination, one of the classic addresses in the Irish Midlands.
