The breads and cakes of Sunflower Bakery seem packed with an elemental goodness, as if they mainlined photosynthesis directly into your veins. Pat bakes the breads – rye sourdough; farmhouse white; walnut and cinnamon breadsticks amongst many others – whilst Vi is the cake maker and pastry chef – leek, potato and cheddar pasties; Provençal tarts; blueberry cake with cream cheese topping.
They make their own puff pastry, grow their own vegetables, herbs and fruits, and they bring the business of baking right back to its fundamental elements: pure ingredients, shaped by skill, care and time into things that sustain and delight us with their tactile, generous goodness. Lovely.
