Wilmie Owen's house is one of those clever destinations that, when you find yourself inside it, quickly manages to switch your focus to the outside of the house.
This isn't to undermine the charms of The Slipway, which is comfortable, elegant and charmingly unpretentious.
But when you sit at the breakfast table upstairs, and see the view out across the harbour and across to the village of Baltimore, it's so captivating that you can't rightly think of anything else. And when you espy the garden seat, you want to get out there immediately and simply sit down and stare at the view across the waves and the water. The Slipway is a house where you feel you can make time stand still, such is the sense of water and nature and naturalness.
So, let us suggest that one way to make the most of that breakfast is to build up your appetite by hiking up to the Baltimore Beacon, then when you get back you will be ready for good scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, and kippers, and maybe even the full Irish breakfast. And as you sit and eat and enjoy the view, just let that West Cork feeling wash over you, the feeling of being in a place apart, of being away from it all, tucked away in The Slipway, in beautiful Baltimore, at the heart of West Cork.
