Pier 26 Restaurant
Holly Fitzgerald and Colin Hennessy are really doing the good thing at Pier 26, in lovely little Ballycotton. They have succeeded in transforming a seasonal restaurant into a year-long restaurant, and have done so by dint of hard work, and scrummy cooking. Mr Hennessy has a sure touch, which he allies to a perfect sense of judgement: when those scallops arrive on your table, with some spinach purée, crisp pancetta and beurre blanc, you can witness for yourself the work of a cook who knows exactly what flavours and textures are going to work best together. He likes food that offers immediate tastes, such as grilled rock oysters with Crozier Blue cheese and herbs, or hake with fresh asparagus and a lemon and hazelnut butter. And, like the best cooks, he shows utter respect to simple things such as their trademark chowder and their daily offering of fish and chips, which uses overlooked fish such and pollock and haddock. Fish and shellfish dominate the blackboard specials, and you would be kinda crazy not to order these when their delivery is achieved so expertly. Lovely room, super wines, charming service, and another east Cork star.
