It’s only in Café Paradiso that you find yourself handing the menu to the waitress and saying: “I’ll have the braised turnip for my main course, please.” And that is the genius of Denis Cotter and Geraldine O’Toole’s restaurant: what you choose to eat here are things you wouldn’t even consider ordering anywhere else: scorzonera fritters; pumpkinseed chocolate mole; ginger pudding. Paradiso has been managing to change people’s minds for more than 25 years now, and its status as the greatest place to eat imaginative meat and fish-free dishes remains unchallenged, and no other plant-based eating destination comes close to the verve, inventiveness and sheer brassiness of this great Cork institution. Great service from Ms O’Toole, great wines available by the bottle, mezzo, quartino and glass, and the Paradiso room is ageless.
