The Old Barracks Pantry & Bakery

All the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

How lucky Athenry is to have the dedicated and super-hard-working team who power The Old Barracks, cooking delicious food for locals and visitors seven days each week. Fiona and Cathal and the team take things from scratch, right down to sourcing foods from their own west coast farms, and then the bakery and the bistro operate in tandem during the day, with an excellent breakfast selection followed from noon by the main dishes of the day – a daily roast; their Angus beef burger; Galway Hooker ale battered cod; spiced chilli beef with sour cream – alongside their selection of sandwiches, wraps and a very thoughtful children's menu. At the weekends, then, the Bistro unflaggingly moves straight into evening service until 8.30pm, and the kitchen gets to show its style with dishes such as pulled pork spring roll with red cabbage and apple slaw; Thai-style fish cakes; confit of duck with red wine jus, beetroot and goat's cheese tarte tatin. As if this astonishing work rate wasn't enough, the Old Barracks will also cater for your party, and the bakery offers every sweet and savoury delight your heart could wish for. A dedicated ethic of service to the community, and to each and every customer, resonates from Cathal and Fiona and the entire crew in The Old Barracks.
