Their shop, and their service to the people of Limerick, is one of those vital things that keeps the city alive and ticking. It’s such a pleasure to shop here, to be able to enjoy the fruits of the history, skills and knowledge of the O’Connell’s team. To take just one example: their traditional and honey-cured hams not only keep alive the great Pigtown tradition of the city, they are also winners of many national and international awards for their excellence. But the hams are only one element of this magical meat emporium, which will soon celebrate 100 years in business. It’s a commonplace to hear O’Connell’s described as “the best butcher’s shop in Limerick”, but as soon as you step into this shining palace of good things you will understand why it is regarded with such respect, and affection. So, make sure you track down Billy the Butcher, and his butcher’s bike, on Little Catherine Street. You haven’t been to Limerick until you’ve been to O’Connell’s.
