The Natural Foods Bakery
Back in 1989, working on our first book, one of the first places we visited in Cork city was Natural Foods, on Paul Street. We bought beautiful breads and the amazing cherry buns – which were famous even then – and we thought we had found heaven. Which, of course, we had, for a bakery that makes the staff of life both wholesome and beautiful is a place that makes slices of heaven.
More than 20 years on, and Natural Foods, minded and shepherded by Orla and Ellie and Roddy, is still baking foods for the gods, but today they do it at Blackrock as well as Paul Street, and you can also see their handsomely bedecked trestle tables at markets in Mahon Point and Coal Quay. Their vision of good food is rock solid: proper soups – nettle; celeriac with lemon; mushroom with black and white pepper – fine breads; proper pies; clean and fresh salads; artisan meats. These guys do the food that salves your soul. It is tastes like haven, then it is heaven.
