The Montenotte Hotel

All the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

The Montenotte Hotel has already begun to collect trophies for excellence, and we can expect more to follow. “I want people in the locality and city to feel like it is theirs,” is how owner Frankie Whelehan has described his ambitions for Cork city’s benchmark Hotel. Well, what resident of Cork, and visitor to the city, wouldn’t want to claim ownership of this stunningly stylish destination, with its calm and gorgeous decor, and its unmatchable views out across Cork city. The views from the dining room and balcony, high up the hill on the northside of the city, are entrancing, especially late at night when you sit sipping a gin and allow the lights of the southern capital to mesmerise you.

The positive results of the big refurbishment and the creation of a new team in the kitchen and front-of-house have already arrived, and the Panorama terrace has scooped the prize for best hotel bar. Everything is well judged and apposite in the Montenotte, and the sense of comfort and care means that Mr Whelehan’s ambition to be a pivotal local hotel is already in the bag.
