MacNean House & Restaurant
Neven Maguire and his MacNean Restaurant are such a part of the public culture these days that it’s easy to forget just what a struggle Maguire had to keep the restaurant going during the days when the Garvaghy Road shenanigans had turned the Borderlands into a no-go zone, and when people only went to Blacklion to buy cheap petrol. Maguire kept the show on the road by doing what he has always done: cooking great food. His secret is to cook some trad dishes for the regulars – he makes a mean steak Diane – whilst giving the culinary pilgrims the ravioli of langoustines with Savoy cabbage and a coconut cream. Today, the kitchen is headed by Carmel McGirr and an all-woman team who do what the MacNean has done in good times and bad: cook marvellous food.
