Left Bank Bistro
Back in 1996, we wrote that Annie and Mary's Left Bank Bistro, which had opened in February of 1995, was “the right restaurant in the right place at the right time.”
Twenty years later, and the Left Bank remains the right restaurant in the right place at the right time. Plus 20 years, of course.
What an extraordinary achievement by these two dynamic women, and what a legacy of marvellous, creative cooking they have gifted to the people of Athlone for twenty years. Today, the characteristics of the LB menu exhibit the same characteristics as two decades ago, when we wrote that the cooking came from “the funky left-field” of the culinary arts. Those left-field touches are see in the shot of verjus that shakes up a beetroot risotto with hake, or the pickled carrot in a five-spice spring roll with duck, or house-smoked hickory salmon with preserved lemon. Of course, they can also play it straight, so there are ageless warhorses like buffalo wings with blue cheese and celery, and Roscommon lamb with white bean and chorizo cassoulet, and a Brideswell sirloin with garlic and parsley butter.
And with the ace cooking comes brilliant service, great value, and one of the most elegant, informal rooms in all of the Midlands. Annie McNamara and Mary McCullagh deserve the freedom of Athlone.
