Knockeven House

All the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

People disagree about whether it is God who is in the detail or if it is the Devil who is in the detail. There is, however, a simple way to decide this old conundrum. Stay at Pam and John Mulhaire’s Knockeven House, in Cobh, and order the scrambled eggs for breakfast. After just one forkful, you will agree: it has to be God who is in the detail, for when did you last have scrambled eggs as good as the Knockeven eggs?

Then, just to confirm your findings, come back to Knockeven for afternoon tea and you will see, again, that it is God who is in the detail, for when did you last have the treat of afternoon tea delivered to you at such a pitch of perfection? Every detail, perfect.

But that is what John and Pam Mulhaire do in their beautiful, sumptuous and meticulously maintained manor house, which dates from 1840. The elegance of the rooms, the appositeness of the furnishings, the warmth of the welcome, all coincide to deliver the very best of Irish country house hospitality. The Mulhaires have been doing the good thing ever since they opened Knockeven in 2005, demonstrating with every detail in all they do that they are true masters of the art of hospitality.
