Mary Aston is one of the best Irish bakers we have encountered in years. Mrs Aston bakes in the Irish vernacular style, that sweetly-savoury style that blesses scones and cakes and pastries with what can fairly be called a maternal style – simple, yet precise, designed to please, not to astonish. Believe it or not, but it is really, really difficult to find baking as skilled, confident and delighting as the beautiful things Mary bakes, which makes Glencarrig a precious destination. Of course, it's a very comfortable house, Mrs Aston is a great hostess, the house is set in a beautiful part of beautiful Loop Head, and Mr Aston takes you fishing in his boat so, yes, there will be fresh mackerel for breakfast – Glencarrig is actually the accommodation side of Carrigaholt Sea Angling Centre.
But all the while that you are doing all these things and having a lovely time, you keep thinking about the lightness of the scones, the sweetness of the cakes, the unabashed pleasure that a great baker gives to the world. Mary Aston is a treasure, and we're betting she is going to be a culinary star.
