Leave yourself plenty of time to spare when visiting the café at Glebe Gardens. You will want to visit the seaside gardens, where chickens cluck, goats bleat, bees buzz, butterflies fly and birds sing (tame greedy robins even come to your table while you eat). There are wild areas with orchids and grasses, a river with a romantic bridge, as well as structured areas with ordered vegetables, flowerbeds, and quiet sheltered sun spots. Then back to the cafe in the courtyard, where Tessa, JoJo, Mia and Kezia take the produce of the gardens and transform it into delicious eating: mussels with Rosscarbery bacon; forager’s risotto with nettles and sorrel; Baltimore burger with pear and hazelnut slaw; crab tart with salad leaves. The lemon curd meringue cake is worth the snaky drive down to Baltimore all by itself.
