The Counter Deli
Richard Finney is one of the most dynamic food people in the country of Ireland, never mind the county of Donegal, and The Counter is a precious destination in Letterkenny. Indeed, Mr Finney has created a fascinating hybrid here, over the last decade. It’s a wine shop that is also a superlative deli. It is a café that also hosts pop-up dinners with guest restaurateurs. It is, in short, a shape-shifter, the sort of space that manages to give you whatever you want at whatever time of day. In this respect, The Counter is an original, and more than a little bit genius. Their posh sausage roll (“Quite possibly the greatest in the world”) is a legend, but then everything here is extra good: start the day with frittata with Kemal Scarpello’s stunning sourdough, then explore the Counter staples such as Tuscan bean stew, or the chicken with caramelised onion and Moroccan mayo sandwich. Mr Finney keeps the menus short in order to ensure that everything is good, and everything is, indeed, good, more than good. You will spend a ton of money in the Deli, but that’s ok, because everything is expertly curated. The Counter is one of Donegal's diamonds.
