Michelle Darmody is a player. She is the kind of restaurateur who, when she isn’t busy setting the menu and baking the best cakes, is busy setting the agenda, and creating the conversation. She writes, curates, campaigns, organises, protests, and does it all as wonderfully well as she cooks. The Cake Café has always been as unconventional as it is informal, and its informality makes it one of the best rooms in the city to enjoy breakfast or brunch or lunch, or just a quiet moment to yourself with a cup of Ariosa and a cappuccino slice, or a stewed apple and cinnamon doughnut, or their legendary Guinness cake. There is warmth and generosity in their daily hot pot specials, like the sweet potato, chickpea and coconut stew, and sandwiches and tarts are all shown the love.
