Babushka Kitchen Cafe
“A super cool cafe” is how Trish Deseine described George Nelson’s splendid Babushka, in her wonderful book, “Home”. Yep, babushka is super cool, indeed, stretched out on the Portrush pier. But whilst his kitchen café might be at the end of the world, Mr Nelson has made it into a hub for good food and good times. He collaborates with cheesemakers and brewers – the brilliant Mike Thomson from Young Buck cheese was up here for a cheese and craft beer evening – he rings the changes through the seasons with his menus, he fashions his own probiotic drinks, he has coffee cupping gatherings and, above all, he puts stuff on the table that is simply irresistible: who amongst us wouldn’t hesitate for a second to drive to the pier at Portrush just to have a Broughgammon free range rosé veal stew made with Lacada porter. Who can resist something so local, alluring and sexy? Not us. Babushaka is inspired and, thereby, inspiring.
