Ardkeen Quality Food Store
Shopping at the Jephson family’s Ardkeen Stores, just outside Waterford city on the Dunmore Road, is pretty much the best fun experience that you can have in Irish retailing.
If that sounds like a contradiction – a supermarket where shopping is fun, and not just a bore where you fill up a trolley and get out as fast as you can – then let’s examine the reason why it’s a treat to push a trolley around Ardkeen.
Firstly, the store itself is a design delight: big, bright, yet intimate and welcoming.
And when you need something, or need to ask a question of someone, there is a staff member right there when you need them. Everytime.
The foods they sell in Ardkeen are the best foods you can buy. A huge percentage of them are local foods, from local artisans, working in the counties around Ardkeen itself. As such, they represent the highest quality foods in Ireland. Many supermarkets don’t actually care about that but, in Ardkeen, it is actually their modus operandi: buy the best from the best.
And then there is this: Ardkeen is charming. It’s got charm. We can’t quite work out how it’s got charm – well, apart from the design, service, selection, ambience, of course – but we do know that it has it, in abundance.
Ardkeen Stores is, therefore, a true super market: it’s a collective roof under which super foods from super producers are gathered together by a superlative team of retailers, all for the betterment of the customers, and buying these foods is a super experience. Super. Market.
There is nowhere else like it, and Ardkeen is a true treasure of the South-East.
