Paul Cusack

“The fourth generation of the family are at work in there today”, Paul Cusack will tell you when you ask about how things are going in the new René Cusack fish shop at Limerick's Milk Market. It's the sort of remark that reveals the man's priorities, as well as his values, the intertwining of family and business, the ability to see the long view, to see the long perspective.
That is no surprise, when you know the facts. Cusack's has been trading since 1910, at which time Michael Cusack's business was known as the Grimsby Fish Stores, and Paul Cusack himself has been at the helm since 1985. Mr Cusack will describe the experience of buying and selling fish as “a cultural thing”, so as a fishmonger and shopkeeper he goes the extra mile – the Cusack stores are beautifully maintained, service is fleet and knowledgeable, the long thread of history adding in a back story to the simple matter of buying something nice for your dinner.
Except, of course, fish and fishing is anything but a simple business, and Paul Cusack knows and understands that. Hence his urgency that shopping should be “as pleasurable an experience as I can make it”. Shopkeeping as art; shopping as art; business as family endeavour; culture unearthed in the simplest of transactions.
