"In Cava Bodega", says Caroline Hennessy, editor for the McKennas' Guides, “the menu is a thing of happiness” Ah! Isn’t that just the thing: a thing of happiness. As you would expect from Jp McMahon, those things are “obscure cuts, Spanish flavours, and sherries to try”, so Caroline had “spicy chorizo, earthy chicken hearts and a piquant chorizo sauce that demanded to be mopped up to the last drop with bread made in-house. The sweetest little rib eye and foie gras burger was tucked into a crunchy brioche bun: a couple of mouthfuls of neatly presented pleasure that drew admiring looks from across the room”.
Cava is a Tardis-like space, “a small space upstairs, the kind of place where you end up having conversations with your next-table neighbours and giving each other menu recommendations, with more room downstairs, lots of headspace and an open kitchen to observe”. Caroline ended with “a warm churros with chocolate sauce, crunchy honeycomb and a chocolate rippled ice cream. Already planning a return trip”. Well, who isn’t? MrMcMahon and his team are on a roll these days, firing out smashing food to delight everyone with an appetite in Cava Bodega.
