The Roasthouse, Tralee

All the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

The Roast House is a delightful part of Tralee’s hospitality culture, a destination where Ronan and Linda Hurley have combined a smart modern coffee and restaurant culture with friendly Kerry-style hospitality.
The room is the veritable definition of what you might call a 'friendly' place to eat. A quiet relaxed room instantly puts you at ease, should you choose to sit down and eat, rather than just stop for a coffee at the smart, modern coffee bar whose in-house roastery is the only example of its kind in Kerry.
Should you stop for lunch, then once you've been charmed by the friendly and attentive waiting staff, make a beeline for their trio of signature burgers, three dishes that show how focused and measured their cooking is.
The Kerry beef burger marries a hefty 8 ounces of local beef with onion jam, melty Gruyere and crisp baby gem leaves. It’s a perfect work of burger architecture, with skillfully delicious results that linger all the way to the last bite.
The vegetarian option is a smart alliance of Portobello mushrooms with quinoa and chickpeas, with a nice tumble of gherkin, avocado and tomato, whilst the chicken burger draws acidity from pickled cucumber and sweetness and spice from yuzu mayo and a squidge of sriracha. Fresh side salad and very fine skinny chips show a trio of masterly burger cookery, making the Roast House an essential stop in Kerry's capital town.
