The Red Door

All the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

It’s one of those locations that takes your breath away. The Red Door, the McCallion family’s country house in Fahan, hugs the water’s edge and, with the light magnified by the sea water, it’s the most enchanting destination imaginable. The location alone explains why this is a hugely popular wedding destination, but travellers along the WAW who have no intention of getting married, or who have been married since forever, need to know that the ambition of the team in the Red Door matches the beauty of the setting. Chef Sean Clifford’s cooking is imaginative and creative, and he has great fun with local food such as Donegal beef fillet served with smoked celeriac purée, or Atlantic cod wrapped in Parma ham, or butter poached lobster with a Thai bisque. On weekday evenings they host Grill Nights, when Mr Clifford gets all funky and down-home with smoky creations from his Big Green Egg and, at every turn, the team are doing their very best to look after you.
