How good does this sound: shin of beef and mushroom pie, hand-cut chips, and buttered peas. Would you get up in the middle of the night and walk all the way to Melanie and Ciaran Breslin’s Primrose Café to eat that? We certainly would, and here’s another reason why you should order it: Ciaran owns two butcher’s shops in the city, so you can be certin that Primrose is getting the best meat imaginable, which is why the brisket burger and the braised beef cheeks and the shin of beef and mushroom pie should be on your must-try! list.
Primrose is a sweet and charming room, the staff are fleet and polite, and alongside the terrific savoury cooking they bake fabulous sweet things, from the early morning scones – coconut and cherry; strawberry and white chocolate – to the most delectable cakes, and everything displays oodles of TLC. Put it all together, add artfully mis-matched crockery and Cath Kidston colour, and now you know why Primrose Café is always packed. And you also know how they have managed to open a second branch, Primrose on the Quay, further spreading the gospel of good food in ‘Derry. Just look out for that handsome, striped blue awning, and the promise of a pulled pork bap, and a glass of wine, whilst you look out on the glinting waters of the Foyle.
