O'Dowd's of Roundstone
Four generations of the O'Dowd family have rattled the pots and pans and pulled the pints in this legendary Connemara institution, in the beautiful village of Roundstone. In the process of all those years, O'Dowd's has acquired both a national, and an international, audience: for very many visitors, O’Dowd’s is the first port of call when you arrive in Roundstone. They have acquired their legendary status by maintaining a beautiful traditional bar, and by serving comforting, consistent, tasty food – seafood gratin; poached salmon; smoked salmon pasta; beef and Guinness stew – both in the classic bar, and in the restaurant. The cooking here is just right, the sort of food you always feel like eating, executed with classy confidence and a winning lack of pretention. It’s also extremely important for the village that they keep the pub open all year, so even when the winter is in full flight outside, taking a seat by the fire, and supping a pint of stout and a plate of gratinated oysters is just the thing you dreamed of. The good news is that the reality of O'Dowd's will be better than your dream.
