Luceys The Good Food Shop
How many Irish food businesses can proudly hang that statement above the door? No many, but Ian Lucey of Lucey's The Good Food Shop in the centre of Mallow can and indeed, as the 5th generation of the family to run the business, he can now proudly assert that the 6th generation is already on the way to having the keys to the door.
The key to Mr Lucey's enduring success lies with a simple statement on their website: “They hold firm the virtues of old, while looking forward to tomorrow's customers and their demands.”
So, the present and the practices of Lucey's are informed by the past, and looking forward to the challenge of the future. They manage this by enshrining the values of old – customer service; politeness; efficiency; familiarity; quality – and yet this has been a family business that has always innovated, and innovated in a way that was driven by people's changing lifestyles and demands.
So the focus in Lucey's in recent years has been on not simply serving the splendid, dry-aged pastured meats straight from their own farm, but on offering food solutions for time-pressed customers, whether that is a sandwich or a bowl of soup at lunchtime or a homemade dinner of cottage pie or beef bourguignon, or catering for local events. Lucey's is a major player in Mallow, an enormous asset to the town, through six generations.
