Last time we visited Jerry Kennedy's shop, on a Saturday morning, the place was mobbed. Were they giving away free samples of their legendary Blasket lamb? Their fantastic sausages? Their amazing beef? Not a bit of it: it was just a standard Saturday morning in Kennedy's butchers in Dingle, and the place was a riot. We must have waited twenty minutes before they had a chance to serve us, such was the crush.
But then, Jerry Kennedy's shop is special. Not just because of the legendary Blasket Island lamb, and it is worth walking to Dingle just to try this unique meat. But Mr Kennedy brings the same discriminating eye to everything he makes and sells, so don't be disconsolate if the Blasket lamb is sold out – which is sadly a possibility – but focus instead on the superb Dingle peninsula, pré-sale flavours that everything sold here exhibits. And if you have to wait twenty minutes to get served, then know that it is some of the best-spent twenty minutes of your life. A Dingle star.
