There aren’t actually a whole lot of restaurants in this book that pre-date our very first Irish Food Guide, which was published way, way in 1989. But The Keown family's The Hungry Monk is one of them, for Pat and Sylvia Keown opened their doors in July 1988.

Almost a quarter century later, and the 'Monk is doing the good thing, still doing the good thing in its inimitably humorous and heartfelt way. Julian Keown has opened the new downstairs bistro, so there is fresh dynamism and determination in this much-loved neighborhood restaurant and bistro.
