Heffernan's Fine Foods
Heffernan's seems to be a business blessed with eternal youth. It's actually more than 50 years old – established 1961 by John Heffernan – and yet it is as hip-to-the-trip as anywhere in the West, and these days the West can mount some pretty spectacular addresses to shop and eat. Like so many other Mayo destinations, Heffernan's reinvented itself a few years back, adding to the butcher's shop a spiffing deli and café, whilst continuing the butchery business, which is founded on Mayo meats, and their own abbattoir, where Anthony Heffernan oversees everything.
Many people today talk about farm to fork, but Heffenan's is the real deal: there is care evident at every juncture here, from Bridie's brown bread to your supper striploin. Another vital slice of the great County Mayo renaissance.
