The Galley Fish and Chip Shop
There is a little sign in the restaurant that Joey and Aileen Chambers opened, next to their legendary take-away, which reads: “Dream…Prepare…Achieve”
It’s an apt motto for The Galley, which Joey and Aileen have built into a thriving business over 25 years of hard work. They dream up delicious recipes, they prepare them using the best, sustainable ingredients, and their achievement is to make scores of people happy every day of the week, in both the take-away and the Galley restaurant, by serving beautiful food.
Joey has a fishing background, and still fishes part-time, and it’s no exaggeration to say that respect for the bounty of the sea is what has driven The Galley to its success. The best fish is well minded, fried in the take-away and served with beef fat chips, cooked with sympathy and expertise in the restaurant. The restaurant does offer a full menu, right from breakfast, and the steaks from Nicholson’s of Kilkeel and the excellent steak burgers are reasons enough to go to Annalong. But, for us, it’s the pristine fish that is the jewel: Kilhorne Bay scampi; breadcrumbed fish cake; cod with herb butter; breaded haddock. The room is always filled with happy diners, and service is as good as it gets. Dream, achieved.
