Christian Barcoe knows what people like to eat. Sweet, juicy, plump, crispy prawns. Sweet, juicy, unctuous pork belly. Rich, creamy sauces with fresh fish. Hot chips. Toothsome potato gratin. Soft, yielding red cabbage. Seared, sweet scallops. Creamy, al dente risotto with mushrooms. Sugar-crisped creme brulée. Billowy pavlova. Every plate that he sends out in this little room, just west of Bantry town, is considered for both taste and texture, and his success in getting both elements right explains why Donemark West has met with rapid success – it’s pretty hard to get a weekend table in here. Service is excellent, the wines are good, and this is a fine new discovery on the WAW.
