Pat O'Sullivan has fashioned a great success in his Cafe Noir destinations, handsome, comfortable rooms with particularly well-chosen food, from their excellent rustic breads - white; baguette; cheese and onion, and lots of pretty pastries - to daily staples like James McGeough's magnificent lamb and pork sausage rolls, steak and Guinness pie; good eggy quiches and nice bespoke salads.
The formula is smart, the discipline is considerable, and service from cool staff is right on the money. The Cafe Noirs don't miss a beat, from that first taste of delicious pastry-topped onion soup to the sweet soothing comfort of a proper lemon meringue pie.
