Patricia Roberts

Archive - all the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

Though she has created a pristine city destination in her native Limerick city with the opening of One Pery Square, Patricia Robert’s principal influences in terms of style, ambience, mood and food come from the great country houses of Ireland, such as the Allen family's Ballymaloe House. This explains a lot. It explains the organic, textured nature of One Pery Square, the tight-knit fit between the look of the hotel, the mood of the hotel, and the nature of the food. Most hotels are compartmentalised, which explains their failing. But OPS is very much the product of a singular vision, and a singular determination, so yes it is an hotel, but is has the grace and nature of a private house, which just happens to look after guests.

Ms Roberts was educated in the city, and at Cathal Brugha Street and in management at Galway's Institute. She is amongst he most perspicacious of the modern proprietors, and we forsee heroine status down the line as the singularity of her achievement in OPS is recognised for the revolutionary endeavour it has been in a city where standards are often content to be no more than middling, middle-brow and mediocre. One Pery Square is the antithesis of mediocrity.
