If you get lucky in life, you might create one masterpiece, one piece of work which can happily be described as transcendent.

What, then, do we make of the work of Brigitta and Peter Curtin, because this pair have created not one, not two, but four masterpieces, and all of them are in the little west coast village of Lisdoonvarna, in west County Clare.

The Burren Smokehouse has always been a transcendent experience, for two reasons. Firstly, it is a place to encounter Brigitta Curtin’s sublime smoked fish, truly one of the best food experiences you can have adjacent to the Wild Atlantic Way.

But what makes the Smokehouse special is the fact that Mrs Curtin never ceases to improve the experience of visiting the Smokehouse. What began as a simple smokehouse quickly acquired a visitor centre, offering not just a rewarding commercial experience, but also a rewarding cultural experience. 

And, most recently, the Smokehouse has created the brilliant Taste the Atlantic – Irish Salmon Visitor Experience, a superb interactive experience that takes you deep into the history and lore of the salmon.
