Happy Christmas from McKennas' Guides

Archive - all the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

Steve Collins is a hunger specialist who has worked in major famines and war zones throughout the world over the last thirty years. He has treated sufferers of severe starvation ever since he first worked as a doctor at the time of the BandAid crisis.

Steve - who has a PhD in Nutrition, and an M.B.E., and who has a headful of dreadlocks looped up under that wooly hat - has developed a community-based model of dietary relief that can be administered in the home. His methods have been adopted world-wide by many governments. In 2014 three million children were treated using his techniques. His work has – literally – saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

These days, Steve lives and works as a farmer in West Cork. He farms Dexter beef, which is available to buy from the Dingle Dexter Beef food van, as well as from Manning’s Emporium in Ballylickey, near Bantry.

By making this marginal mountain land productive, Steve's agenda is still the relief of hunger and famine. As he says in the video, "there is a global food crisis coming, we know that. Ireland is not going to be able to ignore huge areas of potentially productive land.” He is applying the knowledge and techniques of nutritional balance that have saved so many lives to nourishing the boggy, wild hills of West Cork, on land that would normally be considered impossible to feed a herd of 65 cattle.

We feel this story brings a perfect Christmas message of the value of food and farming, and also of the beauty of the country we call home. We wish you all a very happy Christmas, and thank you for your support of Megabites and McKennas Guides. Feed the world!

Happy Christmas from us both,

John and Sally
