News and Updates:
Wednesday, 1 May sees the Dave Gumbleton Memorial Prize Gala Dinner.
David Gumbleton was one of the most gifted chefs ever to work in Ireland, and his too early death was a tragedy. It's wonderful to see the memory of a great chef being continued through an annual Memorial Prize, which this year has been won by Muireann McColgan. The dinner takes place next Wednesday in the G Hotel cooked by Head Chef Pauline Reillly with assistance from some students from GMIT. Chefs featuring on the night include Enda McEvoy, Ross Lewis, Kevin Thornton and Denis Cotter. Anyone in the West Coast should not miss this important culinary event. For more information contact The G Hotel.

Wine News:
Dermot and Janice, of Westport's excellent Pantry & Corkscrew, have begun to import the wines of Azienda Bocelli, which is run by brothers Albero and Andrea Bocelli (yes, that Andrea Bocelli). The P&C is the only place in Ireland where you will find these wines, and Janice and Dermot have brought in five of the red wines produced by the winery. We fancy a few operatic arias may be breaking out late in the evening in the Pantry & Corkscrew...

Restaurant News:
Electric Cork has been going hell for leather to get their new Fish Bar opened, and the doors swung wide on Holy Thursday. Eleanor Walsh - we loved her cooking at Eden and at Mackerel - has been involved as a consultant and will be doing the cooking there at the start. Caroline Hennessy loved the whole sea bream loaded with buttery, garlicy capers - you need to order bread to go with this! - and was thrilled to find fino on the menu, which was perfect with a bowl of chilli-spicy sizzling prawns. The room is a gorgeous build: outside looks like a weatherboard NZ seaside holiday home, inside it's all clean subway tiles, exposed kitchen, copper napkin rings and cut-down glass cloths repurposed as mop-everything napkins.
